There’s a beautiful quote from the BBC series of Dr Who, where in the final moments of his current life, the 12th Doctor (played by Scottish actor Peter Capaldi) makes a passionate and heartfelt speech to his enemy.
“What would you die for?...Who I am is where I stand. Where I stand is where I fall.”
Our values - such as integrity, trust, loyalty - are where we stand. They are the driving force for what we do, or not do.
Neuro Linguistic Programming can help you understand your values and teach you how to use them and reorder them to drive effective decision-making.
HOW VALUES IMPACT YOUR LEADERSHIP DECISIONS
Values impact how you work and how you make decisions.
Sarah had been told there was no more operational funding for the year. She had two options - either to make cuts and save money, or to move her people on to full time projects to get funding for those roles. She had spent the last few years building and leading a highly successful team.
Her core values were integrity, family/relationships, trust, loyalty, high performance and high quality output.
She is loyal to her team and the organisation where she works.
Except in this situation, her values were conflicting against each other. These value conflicts are what keeps a person up at night, creating stress and therefore enabling poor decisions.
The process forward looks a bit like this:
- Recognising values
- Re-ordering values (establishing a hierarchy for them to determine what’s the most important)
- Understanding the rules and beliefs that drive values
- Creating a frame of thinking that will resolve conflicts
So how can you learn this pathway forward?
